How to accurately measure arch height with a foot 3D scanner

When it comes to “3D foot scanners,” many people’s first reaction might be: “Isn’t that for measuring shoe size?” In fact, this device does more than simply measure foot length and width. It can also accurately measure arch height, making it highly useful for medical rehabilitation, sports fitness, custom insoles, and even athletic shoe development.

Optical Capture
The scanner emits laser or infrared light, rapidly scanning the entire surface of the foot. When the light strikes the surface, it is reflected back. A sensor captures the time and angle of the return beam, recording the spatial position of each point.

Building a 3D Model
After the scan is complete, the software stitches all the light points together to create a complete 3D foot model, including foot length, width, instep height, and, most crucially, the arch curve.

Accurately Calculating Arch Height
Arch height is simply the vertical distance from the ground to the highest point of the arch on the inside of the sole.

After the 3D model is generated, the software automatically locates the contour of the medial arch and calculates the vertical distance from the highest point to the ground. This value represents the arch height.

The scanner also measures metrics such as arch length, curve steepness, and front-to-back drop, providing greater accuracy and comprehensiveness than traditional ruler measurements.

    Multi-Point Precision Scanning: Traditional measurement methods may only take a few points, while 3D scanning measures thousands of points simultaneously, resulting in high data density and naturally low error. No contact interference: Manual measurement is easily affected by manipulation and pressure, while the scanner uses optical capture to ensure accurate data without compressing or stretching the arch.

Automated calculation: The software automatically generates curves and values, eliminating the bias of manual judgment. This is particularly advantageous for people with low or high arches.
